The Uvac Monastery was founded in 12th or 13th century and is dedicated to the Birth of the Holly Mother of God. It was destroyed in 1691 to remain ruined for the next 300 years.
Once upon a time, it was a wealthy monastery building; according to the remnants, it is clear that this monastery was the center of Christian life, surrounded by numerous slopes with various herds feeding there.
Today, it’s a destination for believers and nature lovers who would get there by feet taking the local path.
Not much is known about the monastery; though based on excavations, it may be perceived that the monastery used to be a large spiritual centre of the area.
Thanks to the research carried out by The National Museum of Uzice, the Uvac Monastery has been renovated and protected by law. In 1995, on the Nativity Holiday, after almost three centuries , the monastery was re-opened for visitors.
