Zlatibor is a mountain located in the heart of the Western Serbian Region connecting Serbia with both Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located 240 km far from Belgrade, 260 km from Podgorica and 180 km from Sarajevo.
Zlatibor is a mountain of exceptional beauty with average altitude of 1,000 meters. It is surrounded by the mountain peaks Tornik (1,496m) and Cigota (1,422m). The air is dry and clean here , the air pressure is low. Zlatibor is featured by as many as 2,000 sunny hours a year.
For its mild climate and a peculiar pleasant ambient, Zlatibor has been known for many years as a convenient place for leisure, recovery and treatment. Tourism has been developed eversince the year 1893. The year 2014 was the 120th anniversary of organized touristic activities. The climate is very favourable for everybody with either acute or chronic respiratory organs conditions, with allergy, thyroid or heart deseases or with anemia.
For winter sport lovers, 9 km far from the centre of the touristic settlement there is the Ski Centre Tornik with four tracks available to accommodate abt 5,400 skiers an hour.
The’ ’MUST SEE“ Zlatibor sites:
The Ski Centre „Tornik" is located at the altitude of 1,110 – 1,490 m, 9 km far from the touristic centre of Zlatibor. The Ski Centre Tornik is equipped with 6-seated cable cars with capacity of 3,000 skiers an hour and with two anchored ropeways with total capacity of 2,400 skiers an hour.
Sirogojno is the most famous ethnic settlement in Serbia. It consists of typical old houses brought from all over Zlatibor.
The Stopica Cave is located in Zlatibor, near the village of Rozanstvo. The Stopica Cave is a so called ’’river cave“ since Trnava Creek runs through it. The cave entrance altitude is 711.18 m. The cave opening is very impressive as it is 35 m wide and 18 m high.
Gostilje is the village where the famous "Zlatiborska voda" (’’Zlatibor Water’’) is produced. The waterfall is a breath-taking natural beauty.
The Zlatibor area is known for the high quality pine timber; thanks to this fact, many important wooden buildings , such as cottage churchs, have been preserved. One of them is a cottage church located in the village of Dobroselica.
This church is also dedicated to The Hearsecloth of the Holly Mother of God. It is laid at a nice hidden spot. Built in 1838, it was used as both a house of God and a shelter from the Turks.
The Uvac Monastery was founded in 12th or 13th century and is dedicated to the Birth of the Holly Mother of God. It was destroyed in 1691 to remain ruined for the next 300 years.
Dimitrije Tucovic was one of the most prominent Serbian theorists of his time. The house where he was born had been built in 1855 as a twofold cottage of a larger size. Its olid construction and architectural details represent an example of the older options to build this type of houses.
